An interesting comment from a reader today about Lance and Novitzky which he decided not to post, so I’ll jot down the gist of it. He said my pieces on Jeff Novitzky helped him understand that with the federal RICO statute, which was originally designed to stop organized crime, prosecutors now have the ability to cast a wider net and pull in coaches, trainers, and management. He made no value judgment, simply saying this is how it is.

I, of course, am dismayed. Cycling has done a good job of cleaning up the sport, as has baseball. There is no need to destroy individual’s lives for the sake of the sport. Call it what it is—a personal vendetta.

In Denmark the performance of the German national team at the championship has contributed to a change. The team spirit and the very apparent cooperation of the players does not fit in with the traditional picture of ‘the’ German.

In the case of Denmark it will take some time to achieve what was possible in the past.

It also takes another coach. Morten Olsen is relying too much on Jon Dahl Thomasson and Dennis Rommedahl. Especially Jon has lost the acuteness and the speed he used to have.

You are so right – for Simon Poulsen personally , though, it must have been consoling that he could spare his team a third goal to the Dutch team.

..but Denmark may – playing terribly at the moment. Coach Olsen is confident – as he has to be, I guess – telling the press that the team is still practising. It will be peaking at the games. Let’s see!

I used the German title because the English version, The Nasty Girl, isn't an accurate translation of schrecklich. "Nasty" implies sexual impropriety. But maybe this was the intention. In any case, it does not accurately represent the film. I can understand using the film in class. Besides being a political statement, the voice-over of the lead actress is very clear and easy to understand. I watched part of a Fassbinder film later and found the German incomprehensible at times. Those are only the impressions of someone who has limited knowledge of the language, though.

Funny to see this title appearing on an American blog. I had almost forgotten about the film, even though many of my students had to see it and comment on it years back.

I watched my copy last night after having read your entry – and yes, I still think it is an interesting film. Attempts to hide the atrocities of the past one will find at all times.
